A Forward in every sense of the word, Jorge Pereyra Diaz is obsessed with putting the ball in the back of the net. It’s not a fleeting desire, nor is it something that he takes for granted. It’s a relentless pursuit that fuels him, drives his every movement, and shapes how he sees the game…

Jorge Pereyra Diaz didn’t need much time to show that he was a man on a mission. Ever since a Sandalwood-style cut-out at the Bangalore Football Stadium announced his arrival to the Garden City, the expectations were clear: bring goals, bring that clinical edge, and slot right into the hearts of Bengaluru FC’s attack and the home faithful.

The Blues knew exactly what they were getting when Pereyra Diaz penned his contract this summer; a striker with 29 prior Indian Super League goals – a fox in the box, whose hunger for goals transcends mere instinct. From the moment he donned Bengaluru’s famous blue, the signs were evident.

Three goals in the Durand Cup served as a testament to the clinical nature that defines his game. The prime example was his 95th minute winner against the the Blasters in the quarterfinal. Perfectly positioned for a back-post flick-on from a corner, Pereyra Diaz executed a swivel volley of the highest order to clinch the tie. And then we got the finger-gun celebrations, followed by a headbutt of the corner flag. Talk about oozing passion!

To Pereyra Diaz, each goal isn’t just a personal triumph – it’s a reflection of his obsession with perfecting the art of goalscoring. But watch his off-the-ball movement a little closer and how he charges at the opposition goalkeepers and defenders, and you will realise that it is never just about the goals for the 34-year-old – it’s about the hunt for them that he truly relishes, and this aspect can be seen in his willingness to contribute to presses, build-ups and in tracking back.

“I characterize myself as a player who likes to always press high. I like to always be in the opponent’s field. The higher up we recover the ball, the closer we are to the opponent’s goal,” Pereyra Diaz details.

This season, Pereyra Diaz has played his part with pre-assists for Naorem Roshan Singh’s goal against Punjab FC and Ryan Williams’ equaliser against NorthEast United at the Kanteerava. Whether it’s dropping deep to link up with midfield or making an incisive run to attract the attention of a defender, Pereyra Diaz’s football IQ is evident at every turn. And while he’s an individual talent, it’s his ability to integrate into a collective cause that makes him invaluable. You often see him celebrate his teammates’ goals more passionately than the goalscorer himself!

It’s no surprise then that in the reverse fixture at Kochi, it was Pereyra Diaz who gave the fans a goal to remember. With the ball at his feet after stealing it off Pritam Kotal and driving to the edge of the box, there was no rush. A slight glance towards Som Kumar in the Kerala goal, a quick shift of his weight, and the ball was lofted delicately over Som’s head – a world-class chip. The kind of goal that makes you wonder if, in his mind, he had already decided the moment and played the outcome and execution in his head even before it had happened. It was an act of pure footballing artistry, a statement of his quality, and a testament to his understanding of the game.

Inseparable from his Maté cup, Pereyra Diaz is keenly aware that football is about more than just finding the net – it’s about building something with the team, being part of a bigger picture. It’s not luck that gets the man from La Rioja in the right place at the right time. It’s a hunger to score that burns relentlessly, but one that’s also tempered by a deep awareness of the game around him, combined with his innate aggression.

“I have played football since I was very young. I have lived practically my whole life with a ball by my side. Where I come from, a lot of games are played in the street. I have played many games on dirt fields, and with children older than me. I think that marks my way of playing a bit, aggressive, always fighting,” he offers.

Pereyra Diaz loves a celebration. While his go-to is the pistol fingers, he amps it up against the team that first brought him to India’s shores. The Argentine has five goals in all competitions against Kerala Blasters, and each celebration has grown progressively more passionate. It started with a respectful fold of hands, but since then we have seen him jump onto the advertising board and cup his ears every time he strikes against the Men in Yellow. Makes you wonder what’s in store tonight. When asked why he takes a special liking to denting the morale of the Blasters, Diaz explains, “My stint there didn’t end well. That is why this match has always felt like a final for me.”

But the facade completely changes when the conversation hinges around his family. “Without a doubt, Jorge off the field is very different! I am very calm, I like to spend time with my family – my wife Mile and three children Lauti, Santi and Nacho – and cook typical Argentinian food to feel at home. They are everything, from my grounding cable to my best motivation! Without them nothing would be the same.”

A forward who plays every moment of the beautiful game with a feverish nature, yet someone who is calculative in every step he takes, and a proper family man deep down. This is what Jorge Pereyra Diaz is all about. A personality capable of making every moment he plays a part in truly special.
