We cannot surrender or give up: Roca

Coach Albert Roca spoke about the need to play with more confidence, ahead of the game against Minerva Punjab FC…

On tough away fixtures and the upcoming game …

Football is not an easy game, things change too quickly sometimes. Unfortunately for us it turned in a bad way and we will have to keep fighting if we need to get to the top. Football is a game of emotions and we go through a lot of pressure, it isn’t easy but we have to learn to deal with it. We have to ensure that we change that against Minerva as it’s just a question of mentality. Even though the results have been unfavourable, the players will go into the pitch with a positive mentality and do their best.

On the absence of Johnson and Juanan for the game…

I’m confident the players will go into the pitch full of confidence. This is a bad situation we are in right now and it is unfortunate, but it isn’t the worst situation. We have good players on the bench and I am confident in their abilities.

On loaning Roby Norales and finding a replacement in his place…

We are working on his replacement, Roby is a good player but unfortunately he wasn’t the right fit for our system. It sometimes happens that some players you think could fit unfortunately don’t. I’m sure we can get someone in his place in the next few days before the transfer window closes. I cannot name anyone we are looking at yet, but if things work out you could be seeing a new player soon.

On establishing his philosophy on the club…

It’s never easy to establish a philosophy in a club as it is a time consuming process. Even in the case of Barcelona, their philosophy is something that was brought into the club over a period of 25 years. But I know we are not Barcelona and we aren’t trying to be either, as we are not a tiki-taka team. But we have to adapt and change a philosophy in such a way that it suits the team. I have to understand the needs of the team and ensure I come up with something that the players can grasp easily.

On the defensive performance of the team away from home and spirit of the team…

It’s true that our defensive performances away from home have been poor. We have to ensure we do not give space to the opponents and that is something I have been consciously working on with the team. We need to correct these mistakes as they we cannot afford to drop any more crucial points. In the last few minutes of the game against DSK we could see the fight in the team as they put up a good performance and played with a lot of spirit to correct their errors. This is the first step a team has to take when they want to play better. I encourage the players to adapt to the situation and play according to how the opponent is bringing the game to them.

On injuries in the squad and the title race…

It’s unfortunate that we have suffered injuries mostly in our defence, and things are made more difficult with Johnson and Juan being suspended. But we are lucky to have Sandesh Jhingan and Salam Ranjan Singh back from injury. Even though they have not played a lot of games together I am confident that they will do a good job together. Sandesh especially hasn’t played for about two months, but I think he is ready and will do a good job.

With regard to the title race, we will never give up and we won’t surrender. We know that we have to improve and change our attitude. I’m sure if we can play better and fight with more confidence the results will come and we will be in the top league again.
